Program Philosophy and Innovation

The 1000 Bikes Foundation philosophy is that you cannot strengthen a community without strengthening its core, the family. Our unique program brings foster parent and child together to open up opportunities to bond so that both can learn and grow with each other. Each recipient of a 1000 Bikes Foundation bike and their family (up to 6) will receive a bike and safety equipment which may include a helmet, lock, and lights. The recipients will have an opportunity to participate in monthly biking and family bonding activities which will include:

  • Demonstration Projects
  • Safety Training
  • Peer Instruction
  • Day at the Track Overnight Cycling Trips
  • Racing Teams
  • Sponsor Teams
  • Career Training (bike repair, retail shops, mobile clinics)

Day of Biking- A free, family-friendly biking event in cities through the Unites States. Rides are generally 20-30 miles and provide an opportunity for families to bond.

Demonstration Projects- A non-riding event thrown with local business leaders, elected officials, public health professionals and mobility advocates at highly visible locations in local cities. A place for families and cycling enthusiasts gather for a day. Event will include biking demonstrations, music, health awareness booths, cycling clinics and more.

Safety Training- Provide classes to youth and their families which include Basics of Bicycling, Traffic Education, and Safe Moves, which will incorporate helmet education, traffic rules, safety guidelines, and on-bike training.

Peer Instructions- trained and supervised peer-led programs in local schools which promote healthy lifestyles and bicycle safety conscious attitudes.

Day at the Track- Offers riders the opportunity to ride or train on professional tracks and courses and learn safe riding in a professional setting.

Overnight Cycling Trips- Overnight family friendly trips to regional parks and open spaces that allow overnight camping.

Racing Team- Professional trained teams for professional competition.

Sponsor Teams- Recreational group cycling teams comprised of families, friends, colleagues and neighbors that form teams for local, amateur and cause-based races.

Career Training- Vocations training to prepare youth for careers as bike technicians or retail store entrepreneurs. Training may include: assembling bicycles, mechanically alterations, diagnosing and testing, inspecting and repairing bicycles, bike shop mentors, and bicycle technician certifications.
